Exterior Wood
Siding
There are a
variety of choices for siding your home. Exterior wood siding
is one possibility for protecting your home from the elements
and giving it a certain style. Different types of wood provide
different levels of protection and give your home a different
look.
Exterior
wood siding can be made from cedar (which can come in shingles
or "shakes" or siding boards), pine, spruce, redwood, cypress,
or Douglas fir. The wood is typically stained or painted, not
only for decoration but also to protect the wood from
splitting, cracking or peeling.
With proper
care, exterior wood siding can last for many years. While wood
is not necessarily a low maintenance type of siding, periodic
staining and caulking will keep it beautiful for
decades.
There are
various types of exterior wood siding, each giving your home a
unique appearance. Wood clapboard or beveled siding runs
horizontally, while wood plank or board siding runs vertically.
Vertical siding is often seen on more modern architectural
styles, while horizontal boards provide a more classic or
traditional look. Exterior wood siding can also be made from
plywood (also known as T-111 siding), which simulates other
patterns at a lower price and requires less
maintenance.
